WATES ANNOUNCE ONLINE INNOVATION PORTAL TO BOOST TRANSITION TO NET ZERO

The Supply Chain Sustainability School are pleased to support and promote Wates’ new self-service, interactive and intelligent marketplace for sustainable technologies.

The Wates Innovation Network (WIN) portal is the first initiative of its kind and has been created by the Wates Group, one of the UK’s leading family-owned construction, development, and property services companies, to help businesses ‘build back better’.

The portal will connect companies directly and free-of-charge, with Partners that can offer solutions to help meet sustainability targets. It aims to create an industry leading network that will accelerate the transition to net zero by showcasing smarter solutions to design, construct and maintain buildings.

Ian Heptonstall, Director at Supply Chain Sustainability School, said: “The transition to NET ZERO is a huge challenge for our industry and to achieve this we need to think differently and adopt new technologies, products and processes. I’m delighted to provide the School’s support to Wates in the rollout of their new WIN portal. This is a great initiative that will foster innovation and raise awareness of the sustainable solutions that are available now and which can accelerate our journey to NET ZERO.”

There are currently more than 40 Innovation Partners featuring on the portal, all approved by a screening panel of environmental experts. Users can filter sustainable innovations based on their requirements to find the product and supplier most suitable for them. The new portal will enable users to connect with businesses directly and better support them in providing tangible environmental and operational savings.

John Dunne, Group Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Director at Wates, said: “The market for sustainable solutions is expanding fast and companies who are not investing in innovations will soon be unable to compete. The issue is 95% of market ready sustainable technologies never get considered because key decision makers do not know they exist, or suppliers don’t have access to the key corporate decision makers. The WIN portal is bridging that gap, showcasing innovation and helping businesses to meet bold environmental targets.”

Wates has been a Partner of the Supply Chain Sustainability School since 2013 and has played an active part in the development of the School as a world-class collaboration, to enable a more sustainable built environment.

How can offsite help us deliver Zero Carbon Homes?

Decarbonisation of homes must be a priority if we’re to achieve our climate targets, both in new build and retrofitting, and there is a huge potential for job creation in the sector. How can offsite construction techniques help us grasp this opportunity?

By manufacturing homes and retrofit solutions offsite, environmental pollution and disruption is reduced on-site. Buildings can also be more easily standardised and constructed to the highest energy efficiency standards. In addition, modular construction and design for disassembly means that we can operate more in line with circular economy principles and reduce primary resource extraction.

In the next couple of months we’ll be exploring this topic in more detail across two virtual conferences, free to attend.

Partner Corner (May 2021) – Advanté Ltd

Primary Service / Product

Oasis® Welfare Units
Advanté pioneered instant start welfare with their first Oasis unit in 1998. The launch of Oasis Welfare provided construction sites with access to welfare facilities before any service connections were available. This prevented delays starting work on site and complied with new H&S Regulations.

Oasis Welfare inspired a whole new industry for self-contained welfare units, while remaining at the forefront of the instant start welfare market, through close client collaboration and innovation.

23 years on, Oasis welfare units provide much more than just welfare. Improvements driven by the needs of Clients has led to the expansion of the Oasis Welfare range to include different layouts, sizes, facilities, and technology.

The Oasis Welfare range focuses on creating positive environments for people working in construction, as well as reducing sites’ carbon footprint and community impact.

Sustainability Credentials

The evolution of Oasis Welfare has been driven by our Clients’ ESG sustainability aims and the Government’s net zero carbon targets. The EcoLogic, EcoMax and (new) EcoLogic SOLAR welfare ranges are all designed with staff wellbeing, environment, community, and economic impact in mind.

Staff wellbeing:
  • Suitable welfare facilities
  • Pleasant environment enhances wellbeing
Low environmental impact:
  • Hybrid Technology limits generator use and CO2 emissions
  • Telemetry monitors and improves performance
  • Renewable energy gained from solar
  • LPG = greener fuel alternative to Diesel
Low community Impact:
  • Low noise = happy staff and neighbours
  • Promotes positive image of construction
  • Quality facilities attract diverse workforce
Low economic impact:
  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Reduced welfare running costs
  • More staff catered for with one unit

How Do You Use the School as a Partner?

Our first involvement with the School was engaging with the Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR) programme, to promote and develop FIR culture and staff engagement within our business. The vast resources made available by the School have helped fast track our learning.

We joined the School as a Partner in March 2019, to support our wider sustainability aims and work collaboratively with a cross section of industry professionals. We gain a valuable insight into Clients’ changing requirements, enabling us to respond with effective, sustainable solutions at the earliest opportunity.

Advanté organised a Supplier Engagement event to demonstrate our commitments to maintaining a sustainable supply chain, in the procurement of products and services, and in the delivery of our service to our clients.

We worked with Partners of the School to develop a policy to treat people responsibly, which resulted in the launch of the People Matter Charter. Since signing up to the commitments of the Charter, we encourage others to do the same, so that we can work together to address people issues, such as equality, diversity and staff retention, in the workplace.

What is the biggest sustainability issue facing the industry?

The Construction Industry’s (and therefore our) biggest challenges are the current and widening skills shortage and achieving the UK Government’s net zero carbon targets.

We aim to promote a positive image of construction by delivering high quality welfare units. We recognise that excellent site welfare and office facilities are required, to retain staff and attract a more diverse workforce into the industry.

In our mission to decarbonise instant start welfare for construction sites, we created our next generation of innovative, market-leading Oasis Welfare units – EcoLogic SOLAR.

EcoLogic SOLAR welfare units proven successful in creating an effective, near carbon-free solution to powering self-contained welfare units. Their advanced telematics have shown impressive levels of solar energy gain, even during some of the darkest winter months. Some of EcoLogic SOLAR’s benefits include:

  • NEW hybrid EcoLogic SOLAR power system
  • Large solar array = increased carbon-free power supply
  • Silent-running welfare when powered by solar or stored energy
  • Next-generation telemetry improves unit performance
  • Impressive reduction in CO2 emissions
  • Reduced welfare running costs
  • Contributing solution to ESG challenges and reporting

One message for School members?

Speaking from an SME perspective, it can be a daunting task to keep up to date with all developments and focus within the industry, as well as the resulting need for upskilling and training your staff to stay abreast. Engaging with the Supply Chain Sustainability School makes this much easier. The wealth of information and training resource available is easily accessible at any time of day, to suit individual members of your team, and to fast track your company’s staff learning.

The Supply Chain Sustainability School, a multi-award-winning initiative which represents a common approach to addressing sustainability within supply chains, has today launched the first ever construction-focused skills hub, dedicated to improving the quality of procurement practices.

The construction sector has not increased its productivity over the forty last years and the Supply Chain Sustainability School members often cite procurement as a blocker to innovation and improved performance. The procurement hub has been set up to increase the skills level for those who buy products and sub-contract services within our industry. By improving these procurement skills, the School hopes to drive productivity improvements and increased value for clients.

A joint venture with the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS), the Institute for Collaborative Working (ICW) and King’s College London, this programme will demonstrate the value of good procurement to the built environment sector, providing free self-assessments, e-learning modules, an innovative cloud-based performance tool and a library of best practice procurement resources.

The Supply Chain Sustainability School’s new topic area in procurement, aims to provide a wide range of free resources to help organisations of all types and sizes improve their procurement skills. Procurement is a critical part of client and contractor policies and strategies; therefore this new topic area will cater for businesses at all stages of their procurement journey, featuring four key topics: Procurement for Beginners, Procurement for Professionals, Supplier Relationship & Management and Collaborative Construction Procurement.

The School is co-funded by CITB and industry Partners, with the direction of the School being led by over 120 Partners – working in collaboration, they share knowledge and free resources to inspire the UK built environment to drive positive change and each share a common desire to upskill the industry.

Shaun McCarthy OBE, Chair of the Supply Chain Sustainability School, said: “In the 25+ years since the Latham Report, there have been various calls for the construction industry to improve the way it procures. Although the industry has pockets of good practice, there is still a need to embed better procurement in all tiers of the supply chain. I am proud to have worked with Partners such as CIPS and Kings College London to lead a programme of work to develop learning resources for all levels of competence through the Supply Chain Sustainability School, which will be made available free of charge to the industry.”

Duncan Brook, Group Director at the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS), said: “Improving procurement skills and capabilities throughout the construction sector has been highlighted in a number of studies and reports as an essential part of addressing some of the poor commercial practices which affect performance, reduce quality and impact safety. It is important that improvement in procurement practices happen at all levels of the supply chain. We at CIPS have been happy to support this important procurement education initiative by the Supply Chain Sustainability School. We would encourage everyone to take advantage of these excellent educational resources and invest the time to improve their procurement skills.”

Professor David Mosey, Centre of Construction Law, King’s College London said: “Industry training on collaborative procurement is long overdue. A practical understanding of collaborative relationships, tools and systems is essential to help us resolve age-old problems and to improve efficiency, value and risk management. King’s College London Centre of Construction Law have been glad to support the Supply Chain Sustainability School in developing their modules, workshops and online tools on Collaborative Construction Procurement, and we strongly recommend them.”

The Supply Chain Sustainability School provides free practical learning and support in the form of sustainability training, networking, e-learning modules, tailored assessments, action plans and a library of over 2,900 online resources. Sign up for free this spring to take full advantage of the new topic area in procurement.

The new topic page can be found on the Supply Chain Sustainability School’s website

HS2 Ltd, Highways England, Network Rail and Transport for London have joined forces in encouraging small and medium sized businesses to register for free training courses, designed to  improve their prospects of meeting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) supply chain requirements and help them secure future contract opportunities.

Working in partnership with the Supply Chain Sustainability School, the four transport bodies want to make it easier for companies to demonstrate their commitment to the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) agenda.  The Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR) Programme has been developed for the construction industry to provide an industry context to the EDI agenda.

The Supply Chain Sustainability School is recognised as a leading training provider and has supported SMEs with accessing free training since 2012.  Through the FIR programme they have supported over 2,000 businesses, helping them to improve their understanding of Fairness, Inclusion and Respect, and its importance in the workplace.

All four organisations outline good practice standards and requirements expected from suppliers to win work. Collectively, the four bodies are now supporting UK businesses to get ‘contract ready’ by providing access to a consistent source of training. This removes the requirement for businesses to complete numerous training and assessment programmes to satisfy multiple clients.

The CITB have funded the FIR Programme for five years, but with the economic impact of COVID they had to reduce funding for this financial year, which meant the FIR programme faced challenges in sustaining its full offer of training. HS2 Ltd, Highways England, Network Rail and Transport for London stepped in to support the FIR programme, to ensure SMEs can continue to access courses free of charge to support their long-term growth prospects and maintain consistency in the UK’s pipeline of infrastructure programmes.

Mark Lomas, Head of EDI at HS2 Ltd said:

“We’re passionate about improving EDI and FIRs outcomes right across our supply chain. A project the size, scale and longevity of HS2 offers a unique opportunity to deliver measured improvements that can improve people’s working lives and career prospects. We’re proud to be supporting this initiative and hope to see many SMEs registering to take part.”

Malcolm Dare, Executive Director of Commercial and Procurement at Highways England, said:

We are delighted to be working closely with HS2, Network Rail and TfL and the Supply Chain Sustainability School to grow our supply chains’ EDI capability and resilience.  We are committed to this agenda and are looking to bring positive and lasting change by delivering meaningful social impact and value through this work.”

Loraine Martins, Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Network Rail said:

“The opportunity to collaborate with Highways England, HS2 and TfL to support our respective and often shared supply chains, so that we are building diversity and inclusion confidence and practices within our sector, was too important to miss.  The more that we can spread best practice and raise standards together, the more beneficial to our collective workforces. We’re pleased to be able to support the Supply Chain Sustainability School in this way and to further our shared ambition to have a more diverse and inclusive working environment.”

Staynton Brown, Director of Diversity, Inclusion and Talent at Transport for London, said:

“Creating a truly diverse and inclusive culture within our sector brings many benefits in delivering a transport network that reflects the communities it serves. This starts with educating and influencing the biases and behaviours of those who work within our industry.

“We are proud to be working with the transport industry to continue our support for these free courses that the Fairness, Inclusion and Respect programme provides. This training will help our critical UK-wide supply chain partners improve upon the great work many are already doing. This will help to continue to drive down barriers and ensure working in transport infrastructure projects is truly accessible to all.”

Businesses can access free online EDI/FIR training pathways at sbcc.group/fir which cover the following topics:

  • FIR e-learning: Recruiting People, Fairly and Inclusively
  • FIR e-learning: Managing Challenging Conversations
  • The Business Case for Fairness, Inclusion & Respect
  • Monitoring & Reporting Workplace Diversity
  • FIR in Procurement and Supply Chain Management
  • Understanding Unconscious bias
  • Mental wellbeing in Construction

Completion of online courses allows participants to gain CPD points and access bespoke action plans which promote the implementation of good practice workplace standards.

Ian Heptonstall, Director of the Supply Chain Sustainability School said:

“I’m delighted that we have four leading infrastructure clients providing a clear and consistent “ask” of their supply chain. The funding provided by these clients enables suppliers to access construction specific training that will help them develop their knowledge of equality and diversity good practice and in turn foster a culture of fairness, inclusion and respect within their teams – making our industry better for all.”

The School is pleased to announce that Alcumus has become the latest Partner to join the School.

Alyn Franklin, CEO of Alcumus, states:
“We are proud to partner with the Supply Chain Sustainability School who’s vision is to enable a sustainable built environment, which we believe can be strengthened by our rich stock of built environment knowledge. The construction industry is tackling substantial challenges across all levels of the supply chain, from sustainability issues, to the impact of Brexit and of course the Coronavirus pandemic. We’re deeply committed to supporting the community and the industry with the resources to address risks, build business resilience and help create safer workplaces and stronger built environment in the UK.’

Ian Heptonstall, Director at the Supply Chain Sustainability School, adds:
“We are delighted to welcome Alcumus into our collaboration. Committed partner organisations willing to share their expert knowledge helps us ensure the future of the UK’s built environment is fairer, greener and more robust, as the industry rallies together to ‘build back better’.”

The School is pleased to announce that Mane Contract Services has become the latest Partner to join the School.

Mane Contract Services place sustainability at the forefront of their business. Therefore as part of their ongoing commitment to driving true sustainability throughout their business and supply chain, they believed that becoming a partner of the Supply Chain Sustainability School was a no brainer.

The Supply Chain Sustainability School is the UK’s leading sustainability engagement tool. Becoming a partner was a natural step to further align ourselves with other likeminded organisations and play our part in effecting positive change throughout or industry.”  – Darrell Atkins, Divisional Director

New Fairness, Inclusion & Respect resources will benefit everyone in UK built environment

A suite of new learning materials launched today and made freely available to all those working in UK built environment will drive positive change in the sector, industry leaders have said.

The new resources, part-funded by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), have been developed by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) and the Supply Chain Sustainability School, with a steering group of leading industry stakeholders. The resources have been rolled out to mark the beginning of National Inclusion Week (28 September-4 October 2020).

The resources include three new workshops:

These workshops are accompanied by newly developed e-learning modules:

Sarah Beale, CITB Chief Executive, said:

“Even before the pandemic, construction recruitment faced the challenges of an ageing workforce with a real lack of diversity and the pending implications of Brexit, so it is more important than ever to build inclusive cultures across all parts of our industry.

“These resources will help drive the positive change we need to attract new entrants from a wide range of backgrounds to our sector, and ensure construction is the rewarding career we know it to be for everyone.”

Andy Mitchell CBE, co-chair of the Construction Leadership Council, said:

“National Inclusion Week is an opportune moment to remind everyone that not only is there a moral case for driving inclusive cultures in the construction industry, but that there is a business case for it as well.

“Inclusive workplace cultures are more productive, innovative, and profitable. Promoting a culture of Fairness, Inclusion and Respect can bring benefits to businesses of all sizes and helps attract and retain people from the full pool of talent in the UK workforce.

“There has been positive cultural change across our sector in recent years, but it is beholden to us all to remember that we always have more to learn and things we can improve. These new resources are a welcome addition to the already extensive range of FIR materials that are available, and we hope their uptake will be as wide as possible by businesses at all levels of the UK supply chain.”

Stephen Cole, CITB Head of Careers Strategy, said:

“These resources will benefit UK construction and demonstrate why CITB has been proud to fund the Fairness, Inclusion & Respect programme since 2015.

“Cultural change also aids both in the attraction of new skills and retention of existing ones, which is of particular importance at this time.”

McCarthy & Stone becomes the 100th Partner to join the award-winning industry-wide School in just 8 years.

With over 40,000 registered users, more than 14,000 member companies and another 12,000 individual members, the Supply Chain Sustainability School is used to big numbers, but it has just added another of special significance: its 100th Partner — the UK’s leading developer and manager of retirement communities, McCarthy & Stone.

For the new Partner, enrolment in the Supply Chain Sustainability School is seen as a fundamental part of the ‘procurement transformation’ journey and the company’s commitment to being a sustainable business, explains Kathryn Gillard, Group Procurement Director, McCarthy & Stone:

“We are delighted to be the 100th Partner. Our FY21 procurement strategy sets out our desire to upskill our people and supply chain; and being part of the School will help us to achieve this ambition.”

The School is a multi-award-winning initiative which represents a common approach to addressing sustainability within supply chains. Led by a Board comprising elected representatives of Partners, the School provides free practical support in the form of e-learning modules, tailored self-assessment and action plans, training, events and networking, delivered by an independent third-party consultancy, Action Sustainability.

Successfully passing the 100-Partner milestone demonstrates the importance of the School to the future of the industry as a whole, especially in a post-pandemic market. This is no time for the School, its Partners and Members to rest on their laurels, however — this is a time to be forward-looking and part of the solution to the challenges the industry faces, says Director of the Supply Chain Sustainability School, Ian Heptonstall:

“The sector faces three major challenges: decarbonisation, productivity and talent. With 100 Partners providing a consistent and clear message to the supply chain, the School is an enabler of the transformative change needed. Through initiatives such as the People Matter Charter, supply-chain carbon footprinting, plus award-winning online learning around sustainability, digital, offsite and lean construction, we can lead the drive to ‘Build Back Better’.”

Founding Vision and Rapid Growth

Launched in 2012, the School has come a long way over the last eight years, but still thrives on working to meet new and rising industry demand, constantly adapting and growing over time, says founding Partner Skanska UK’s Director of Procurement and Supply Chain, Dale Turner:

“The School continues to go from strength to strength and is the UK’s leading supplier-engagement sustainability tool. Our virtual collaborative Supplier Days are now packed with positive experiences and presentations from supply chain Members on what the School means to them and how they are progressing on their sustainability journey.”

For Dr Shamir Ghumra, BREEAM Director at BRE, reaching 100 Partners shows just how rapidly and powerfully the original vision for the School of making an impact on sustainability outcomes has truly become a reality:

“To have seen the School grow from the seven of us who founded it to now reaching this 100-Partner milestone is incredible. It really demonstrates that the School model of providing sustainability training to the supply chain free of charge is an essential service and one that has helped thousands of individuals over the past few years.”

To fellow founder and Director of Sustainability and Procurement, at Morgan Sindall, Graham Edgell, achieving over 100 Partners actually comes as no surprise. In fact, given the world-class collaboration in evidence throughout the School, it was actually inevitable, he argues:

“The Supply Chain Sustainability School continues to thrive and reach new heights. In such a short time, it has become the go-to for sustainability learning and best practice in an industry that normally sees initiatives come and go. The sector will need the School even more if we are to meet the challenges ahead.”

The People Matter Charter

Launched in January this year, the People Matter Charter provides a perfect example of the ability of the School to help companies find the answers to key questions the industry needs to address – in this case, people challenges, relating to both their own workforce and their supply chain, from diversity and skills shortages, to modern slavery.

With recognition growing that systemic change around such issues cannot be delivered alone, being a Partner of the School is now becoming the norm for organisations wanting to work together to make a difference for the long term, suggests Nathalie Ritchie, Supply Chain Sustainability Manager, Global Procurement, at National Grid:

“We recognise we need to use our influence as a client in the sector to communicate our expectations and drive positive change. Having a common People Matter Charter that the industry can endorse and promote is fundamental to ensure alignment and focus attention on what matters, our people.”

The Climate Action Group

Tackling the climate emergency and responding to UK net-zero targets is another vital area for collaborative working. If the built environment sector hopes to shoulder its responsibilities and reduce its impacts, it first needs to understand and manage carbon in its supply chain. The School’s Climate Action Group is the forum to enable this transition to a zero-carbon future, with over 30 of the Partners and their suppliers all collaborating to report their performance against carbon-related activities through the Sustainability Tool.

Working together to footprint and address climate impacts embodied in the supply chain, will be critical to cutting carbon, both now and in the future, suggests Martin Gettings, Head of Sustainability, Canary Wharf Group:

“The power of collective collaboration is the driving force behind the Climate Action Group, bringing together all levels of supplier alongside some of the biggest names in the sector, working together to deliver real carbon reporting and reduction initiatives that can be adopted by the whole built environment. Put simply, we will not be able to achieve our long term commitments without it.”

The Plant Charter

Tackling specific challenges within the industry, the School’s Plant Group has also been working on how the sector can collaborate to reduce both air quality emissions that lead to local health impacts and the global effects of carbon emissions from plant and equipment. As a result, the Group launched the Plant Charter to encapsulate and communicate best practice on this, with its Partner Flannery Plant Hire the first official signatory.

With the School considered its ‘go-to’ organisation for environmental standards and capability, the Charter has put further emphasis on the firm to be better every day, says Chris Matthew, Strategic Manager at Flannery Plant Hire:

“The School has actively sought to raise everybody to a fair, achievable common standard and has produced a roadmap, by way of the Plant Charter, for how these expectations will evolve uniformly over the coming years. UK construction needs standout, ‘lighthouse’ projects to shine a beacon on innovation, and the School’s work to capture this and drive it forward across all contracts and project sites is where we as an industry will see real change.”

From the People Matter Charter, to the Plant Charter and the carbon footprinting in The Climate Group, the Supply Chain Sustainability School celebrates its 100th Partner milestone by continuing to do what it does best: deliver world-class learning and support systemic change, by being collaborative, progressive, inspirational and inclusive.

The Supply Chain Sustainability School launches its industry Plant Charter, committing to emissions reductions.

The School has launched its Plant Charter, a commitment by organisations designed to reduce their air quality emissions, and School Partner Flannery Plant Hire, has committed to be its first signatory.

The Plant Group has been working on how the sector can collaborate to reduce both air quality emissions that lead to local health impacts and the global effects of carbon emissions from the plant and equipment we all use.  As a result, the group developed the Charter to encapsulate and communicate their approach to this.

James Cadman, School Plant Group lead & Lead Consultant at Action Sustainability explains:

“Our aim is that the Supply Chain Sustainability School will lead the way for the UK’s built environment to drastically reduce onsite emissions to air that are harmful to human health and the planet, such that they will reach net zero by 2040 and contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goals 3, 11 and 13. We would like organisations up and down the value chain to collaborate with us in coordinating our efforts to reduce these emissions for everyone’s benefit.”

Flannery have been a proactive member of the School’s Plant Category Group and support the collaborative approach across the industry to achieve these goals.

Managing Director Patrick Flannery commented:

“As a business, understanding our environmental impacts and managing these is really important. Sustainability and innovation are two of our key value drivers and underpin the decisions we make and ensure we can support clients in the delivery of the cleanest, and most efficient hire solutions for their construction projects.

It is, however, really important that there is a consistent approach throughout the supply chain and the Supply Chain Sustainability School are best placed to facilitate this. I am sure that this Charter will have a great impact and as a business, we wanted to confirm our commitment and support by being the first signatory.”

The industry has been under increased scrutiny from clients and the government on the negative effect engines have on the air quality of our towns and cities. Coupled with policy and penalties pushing organisations to address these issues via a fleet and plant strategy, the construction industry has been looking closely at how it operates plant, what it invests in, and how plant is disposed.

The Plant Group was established by School Partners and other key industry stakeholders to develop and facilitate the implementation of the School’s position on best practice sustainable procurement within the category. This Partner collaboration, including Flannery (Partners since 2012), is helping to identify and provide the supply chain with information and guidance on plant standards and management.

Flannery’s Strategic Manager Chris Matthew, who sits on the Group’s team, said:

“Being part of the working group that has developed this Charter has proved hugely beneficial for our business. Sharing best practice and ideas can only help to drive the behavioural change our industry needs to meet commitments to papers like this, but also broader papers like Construction 2025.

It has identified, for us, key areas that we know we understand and can now help our supply chain partners develop and adopt, through examples like our ECO-Operator program and our developing data offering for clients (the effective use of telematics to optimise hire fleet).

It has also supported the business as we forward plan, talking to manufacturers about investment and renewal of our fleet and the types of innovation we would like to continue seek out and bring to market.”

McCann Group’s Cycle to Spain Challenge for the NHS

McCann Group is a family-owned organisation, consisting of McCann Ltd a civil and electrical engineering company working across the UK on major infrastructure projects and Peter James Homes a property developer of unique high-quality designer homes across the East Midlands.

As a team, they wanted to accomplish something worthwhile together during the current Coronavirus outbreak that helped keep them unified and active, encouraged the communities they operate in to maintain positive fitness practices under potentially sedentary circumstances and to support our NHS Staff, Volunteers and patients impacted by Covid-19 across the country.

They have set themselves the challenge of ‘virtually’ covering the distance from the Head Office in Nottingham to Madrid, Spain and back home again. The distance is 2,324 miles and they will record individual activities such as running, walking, rowing and cycling within their daily exercise allowance (and within lockdown and social distancing guidelines), in order to take them to that magic number as a company.

All funds will be donated directly to NHS Charities Together in order to support the NHS above and beyond normal NHS funding. This additional financial support goes towards equipment, support mental health recovery, provide tablets for isolated patients to enable communication with loved ones and much more.
